“How much will it cost to get my lawn mowed?” is the first question almost every customer asks me, and it is a fair one. The honest answer is that it depends, but you can still get a good idea of what to expect before you pick up the phone.
Typical prices in Melbourne
Published cost guides put most Melbourne mows somewhere between $50 and $200 per visit, depending mainly on the size of the lawn. As a rough guide:
| Lawn size | Typical price per visit |
|---|---|
| Small (courtyard or small front lawn) | About $50 to $100 |
| Medium (average suburban lawn) | About $70 to $160 |
| Large (big front and back lawns) | About $95 to $220 |
| Extra large (500 m² and up) | About $145 and up, often quoted by the job |
Prices vary between guides and between businesses, so treat these as ballpark figures rather than a quote. For comparison, Airtasker’s cost guide and What’s the Damage both publish Melbourne figures in similar ranges.
What changes the price
- Lawn size: priced by the area of grass, not the size of the block
- Condition: overgrown, wet or very dense grass takes longer and may be charged by the hour
- Access and slope: steep banks, steps, or no side gate all add time
- Frequency: regular fortnightly or monthly clients usually pay less per visit than one-off jobs
- Extras: edging, whipper snipping, hedge trimming and green waste removal are often charged on top
- Travel: a local operator close to you can often be better value
One-off versus regular mowing
A one-off mow, especially on a long lawn, costs more because it takes longer and may need a second pass. Regular mowing keeps the grass at a manageable height, so each visit is quicker and cheaper. Most of my clients start with a one-off cut and then move to a fortnightly or monthly schedule, which is what my lawn maintenance service covers.
How to compare quotes fairly
- Ask exactly what is included: mowing, edging, whipper snipping, blowing down paths and removing clippings.
- Check whether green waste removal is included or extra.
- Confirm whether the business is insured, and ask for a certificate of currency.
- Ask who will turn up and whether it will be the same person each time.
- Be wary of a quote that is far below everyone else’s. It often means corners are cut or extras appear later.
